RUTLEDGE DIRECT MALE LINEAGE

FROM KENNETH JACK RUTLEDGE TO WILLIAM RUTLEDGE OF VIRGINIA

12 June 2021

Cindy Barber

Generation One – Kenneth Jack Rutledge was born 1 August 1937, probably in Marion County, Illinois and died 28 July 2013 in El Paso County, Texas.[1] Jack was the son of Leslie Edward Rutledge and Anne Laurie Edwards.[2]

Jack married Carolyn Sue Bowman 23 February 1963 in El Paso, Texas.[3] He married Mary Kay Carr 12 August 1965 in El Paso, Texas.[4] He is buried in the National Cemetery at Ft. Bliss, Texas.[5] His Social Security number was issued in Texas in 1952.[6]

Generation Two – Leslie Edward Rutledge and Anne Laurie Edwards were married 27 December 1933 and divorced 19 February 1969 in El Paso, Texas.[7] Leslie was attending Illinois State Normal University in 1933.[8] Leslie, the son of William Arthur Rutledge and Viola Kennedy was born 15 May 1913 in Illinois.[9] He died in Springfield, Illinois 6 March 2002.[10]  Anne Edwards Rutledge died 8 April 1986 in El Paso County, Texas.[11]

Generation Three – William Arthur Rutledge and Viola Kennedy applied for a marriage license on 23 December 1907 in Sullivan, Indiana.[12] Arthur, the son of George H. Rutledge and Jessie Gray, was born 12 March 1887 in Hutsonville, Illinois.[13] Arthur died on 26 March 1974 in Hutsonville, Illinois.[14]

Generation Four – George Henry Rutledge married Jessie Flora Gray 3 March 1886 in Sullivan County, Indiana. George, the son of William Rutledge and Ann Glasson was born in February 1857 in Tippecanoe County, Indiana.[15] Jessie Gray Rutledge died 5 April 1895 and is buried in Hutsonville Cemetery, Illinois.[16] In 1910 and 1920, his son Arthur and Arthur’s wife, Viola were living with George in Hutsonville, Illinois.[17] George died 27 May 1951 in Hutsonville, Illinois.[18]

Proof of parentage: George H. Rutledge appears on the 1880 Sullivan County, Indiana Census in the household of William and Ann. George is 13 on 1870 Hutsonville, Illinois Census with brother David W., whose death record is the proof of names and birthplaces of his parents.

Generation FiveWilliam Rutledge married Anna Malinda Glasson 28 February 1845 in Tippecanoe County, Indiana.[19] William, who may be the son of William Rutledge and Elizabeth Drawbond, was born between 1820 and 1829 in Rockingham County, Virginia.[20] In 1850 William was a wagon maker and lived in Tippecanoe County, Indiana.[21] William served in the Indiana 12th Infantry, Light Artillery in the Civil War.[22] After the Civil War and by 1870, William moved to Hutsonville, Illinois.[23] William died 24 December 1891.[24]

Generation Six –  When David William Rutledge, the son of William, died in 1928, the informant listed his father’s birthplace as Rockingham County, Virginia. Earlier records said Virginia. Indirect evidence does lend credence to this claim, but because of record loss, was not confirmed. William Rutledge (the only Rutledge in Rockingham County) posted a marriage bond on 19 March 1810 with the intent to marry Elizabeth Drawbond.[25] They married the next day.[26] William was born between 1780 and 1790.[27]  William may have died between 1830 and 1840.[28]

Supporting Evidence: Levi Rutledge first appears in Rockingham County in 1840.[29] He married Magdalena Knopp before 1840.[30] Levi, born about 1815, may be the son of William Rutledge. Levi’s son, Peter wrote that Levi was a native of Virginia, but of foreign ancestry.[31] Peter did not name his grandfather.

In 1830, William had sons of the ages to be Levi and William.[32] There were two other sons as well, which have not been researched. Extensive research has not been conducted to isolate William’s other children, beyond area census work, which was unfruitful.

If William (b. 1820-1829) and Levi (b. about 1815) were the sons of William (b.1780-1790) who married Elizabeth Drawbond, the elder William may be the immigrant ancestor.

Birthyear range is based on the 1850 and 1860 Census records where William’s age was listed as 24 and 36, giving a range of 1824-1829, and is in line with his children’s birthdates. Later Census ages move birthdate back to 1820, but because they are farther from the event, have been disregarded.
