RUTLEDGE DIRECT MALE LINEAGE

FROM MICHAEL EDWARD RUTLEDGE TO MICHAEL RUTLEDGE OF BALTIMORE COUNTY, MARYLAND

19 May 2021

Michael E. Rutledge & Cindy Barber

Generation One – Michael Edward Rutledge was born in Maryland and is the son of Edward Leonard Rutledge, Jr. and Joyce Louise Liller.[1]

Generation Two – Edward Leonard Rutledge, Jr and Joyce Louise Liller were married in Maryland on about 10 February 1958.[2]  Edward, the son of Edward Leonard Rutledge, Sr. and Nina Catherine Shanklin, was born in 1938 in Baltimore, Maryland.[3]

Generation Three – Edward Leonard Rutledge, Sr and Nina Catherine Shanklin were married on 21 September 1937 in Monroe, West Virginia.[4] Edward was born on 21 Sept. 1916 to Albert Lee Rutledge and Margaret Amelia Decker.[5] Edward died 8 November 2005 in North Carolina.[6] He was buried in Lake View Memorial Park, Baltimore, Maryland.

Generation Four – Albert Lee Rutledge and Margaret Amelia Decker were married 10 Apr 1914.[7] Albert was born in Jessop, Maryland on 1 September 1895 to Andrew Lee Rutledge and Rosa Schmidt.[8] Albert died 14 May 1970 in Baltimore, Maryland.[9]

Generation Five – Andrew Lee Rutledge and Rosa Schmidt were married about 1893.[10] Andrew was born in Maryland in January of 1874 to Albert C. Rutledge and Josephine Elizabeth Jackson.[11] Andrew died 15 December 1915 in Baltimore, Maryland.[12]

Generation SixAlbert C. Rutledge and Josephine Elizabeth Jackson were married 3 October 1872.[13]  Albert was born 13 November 1848 to Thomas Talbot Rutledge and Cynthia Richardson.[14] He died 14 April 1927.[15]

Generation Seven – Thomas Talbott Rutledge and Cynthia Richardson were married 4 May 1841 in Saint James Protestant Episcopal Parish, Baltimore, Maryland.[16] Thomas was born in Harford County Maryland on 29 Nov 1813 to Joshua Rutledge and Augustine Ann Biddle.[17] Thomas died 13 October 1883 in Harford County, Maryland.[18]

Generation Eight – Joshua Rutledge and Augustine Ann Biddle were married 11 November 1792 in Baltimore County, Maryland.[19] Joshua was born 3 April 1759 to Abraham Rutledge and Penelope Rutledge.[20] Joshua died 15 September 1825.[21]

Generation Nine – Abraham Rutledge and Penelope Rutledge were married 13 October 1747 in Maryland.[22] Abraham was probably born between 1721 and 1727 to Michael Rutledge and Hannah (surname unknown).[23]  Abraham died 13 September 1807.[24]

Generation Ten – Michael Rutledge and Hannah (surname unknown) were married before November 1718 in Maryland.[25] Michael was born about 1695.[26]

Generation Eleven – Michael Rutledge (before 1674-1709?)  The top contender for this generation, Michael first appears in Baltimore County, Maryland in the will of John Boring. When Boring died in 1690, he owed Michael 400 pounds. [27] This bill, the first reference to Michael and listed alongside Edward Rutledge, suggests Michael was an adult in 1690. This coupled with the 1692 census, where he had to be over the age of 16, shows he was born before 1674.[28]  Michael was the only adult male in his household on the north side of the Patapsco River, in the same area as the Boring and Ferry families. In 1694, aged around 20, Michael stayed the only male older than 16 in his household.

In 1698, now more than 24 years old, Michael Rutledge, Planter, bought Hopewell, 60 acres located along Sterling Creek in Baltimore County, less than 5 miles northeast of the Boring lands for 2,000 pounds of tobacco from Robert Benger.[29] In 1699 he lived in the Middle River Hundred.[30]

I believe this is the Michael who was married to Anne and died in 1709. His inventory and probate make no mention of land. However, this is common if the land passed silently to his oldest son (right of progeniture). In 1709 he would have been over 36 years old. There is no record of probate for Anne Rutledge, so she likely remarried. Given his death date, he may have been born as early as 1654 or before.

[23] Abraham’s age is based on the ages of his siblings. William, the oldest as proven in Hannah’s probate was born about 1719. So, Abraham was born after William, 1721 meets the common two-year placement of children. He married in 1747. If he was 20 at the time, his birthdate may have been as late as 1727. Note: Findagrave.com memorial number 2888164 holds a stone in memory of Abraham with a birthdate of 1722, but no source has been found to corroborate this, and the stone is modern.
